TEHRAN – Putting some spark into Gilan’s tourism, the number of international flights to and from Rasht airport has significantly intensified over the past couple of months.

Rasht’s Sardar-e Jangal Airport now handles 24 international flights per week, reflecting a remarkable increase compared to the previous number of only two flights, Seyyed-Mohsen Mirhosseini, who presides over the airport told IRNA on Wednesday.

“For the time being, the airport offers flights to the Iraqi cities of Najaf, Baghdad, and Basra,” he brought to light adding that the flights are arranged to be conducted on various days of the week.
Four Iranian and Iraqi airlines, the director-general underscored, are operating flights on these routes.

“A direct flight route between Rasht’s Airport and Armenia’s Yerevan has also been established, marking the first such connection,” he noted. “Rasht-Yerevan flights are being conducted twice a week.”

Attributing the increase to the growing interest of foreign tourists in visiting Gilan, Mirhosseini stated that following negotiations and the promotion of the region’s tourism potential by travel and tourism companies, Iraqi Airways began operating at Rasht Airport, leading to a notable influx of Iraqi tourists and a sharp rise in flights from the neighboring country.

“The Sardar-e Jangal International Airport is well-equipped with advanced navigation systems and aviation infrastructure, making it highly capable of handling both domestic and international flights,” the director-general outlined.
In his final words, Mirhosseini mentioned that plans are underway to establish flight routes to Astrakhan in Russia and Turkey in the near future.

Sardar-e Jangal International Airport, known as OIGG in international aviation records, is strategically located near the Caspian Sea. Situated close to Rasht, Iran’s third most visited city, and just 15 kilometers from the Anzali Free Zone, it is one of the country’s most accessible airports.
