Over 21m tons of imported essential goods distributed across country in 10 months

TEHRAN – Iran moved 21 million tons of imported essential goods from its ports in the first 10 months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21, 2025-January 20, 2026), a deputy minister said, highlighting the role of truck drivers in supplying basic commodities.

Reza Akbari, deputy minister at Iran’s Transport and Urban Development Ministry, said the shipments helped meet public demand for essential goods, particularly after the rollout of the electronic ration card scheme.

Akbari said around 600 million tons of domestically produced goods are distributed across the country each year, of which about 20 percent – roughly 120 million tons – consist of agricultural, livestock and food products.

He said 507 million tons of domestically produced goods were transported nationwide in the 10-month period, supported by more than 32.6 million consignment notes issued by the internal transport network.

That marked growth of 2.5 percent compared with the same period last year.

Transport of agricultural, livestock and food products reached about 100 million tons over the period, up 20 percent year on year, Akbari said.

He added that annual imports of essential goods, including nine key items such as wheat, barley, soybean meal, sugar, chemical fertilizers and corn, total nearly 25 million tons, of which 21 million tons were transported from ports during the 10 months.
