SOUTH LEBANON—In yet another astonishing display of political arrogance, Donald Trump arrogantly declared that he believes he should personally be involved in selecting Iran’s next leader following the martyrdom of Sayyed Ali Khamenei.

As plumes of smoke rose over Tehran and news of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei’s assassination circulated through international newsrooms, a familiar expectation took hold in Western policy circles: the “Islamic Republic,” long portrayed as a house of cards balanced on a single man, would finally collapse. The Leader was gone. The “regime,” surely, would follow.
Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei was born in April 1939 in Mashhad. He was the second son of his family. His father, Seyyed Javad Khamenei, was one of the scholars and jurists of his time. His father was born in Najaf and moved to Tabriz with his family during his childhood.
