Iran, Pakistan presidents hold phone talks; Pezeshkian urges stronger regional cooperation
TEHRAN - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held phone talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday night to discuss bilateral ties, regional developments, and the implications of U.S. and Israeli military actions for regional and global security.

During the conversation, Pezeshkian outlined the scope of U.S. and Israeli aggression against Iran and clarified Tehran’s stance toward regional countries. He stressed that Iran expects Islamic nations not to allow their territory or resources to be used by the United States or Israel for actions against Iran.
Addressing the impact of these illegal military actions on regional security, stability, and maritime safety in the Strait of Hormuz, Pezeshkian noted that the current insecurity in the waterway is a direct consequence of such developments. He added that Iran has nonetheless taken necessary measures to ensure maritime security and the safe passage of vessels, and will continue to facilitate transit for ships not linked to or supporting the parties involved in the U.S.-Israeli aggression.
For his part, the Pakistani prime minister expressed appreciation for Iran’s cooperation in ensuring the safe passage of Pakistani vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Shehbaz Sharif also called for coordinated efforts among regional and Muslim countries to reduce tensions and promote lasting peace and stability, while reaffirming Iran’s right to self-defense.
Iran has long endorsed a regional security framework that excludes extra-regional powers such as the United States. Many states, however—mostly the small countries in the Persian Gulf—have refused to take charge of their own security, and instead have paid the United States to ensure their safety. This has come at the cost of their relations with neighboring Iran, which has been attacked from Arab Persian Gulf soil by U.S. and Israeli forces.
