UK’s Mandelson questioned over passing market-sensitive data to Jeffrey Epstein

Former UK ambassador to the U.S. Peter Mandelson was arrested Monday at his Camden home on suspicion of misconduct in public office, CNN reported Tuesday.

London’s Metropolitan Police are investigating allegations that Mandelson, a veteran Labour politician, passed market-sensitive information to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as UK business secretary.

This follows Mandelson’s recent resignation from the Labour Party and the House of Lords after files revealed he once described Epstein as his “best pal.”

The scandal now threatens Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s premiership, as critics question Starmer’s decision to appoint Mandelson as ambassador despite his known ties to the financier.

Released on bail Tuesday, Mandelson has not commented on the latest charges, though he previously apologized for the association.

The investigation also coincides with the recent arrest of the brother of King Charles, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, on similar misconduct suspicions regarding his role as a trade envoy.

Under English law, misconduct in public office requires proving a “serious willful abuse” of responsibilities without reasonable excuse.

While difficult to prosecute, the charge carries significant weight as the government prepares to release further correspondence regarding Mandelson’s appointment in early March.
