Dome installation begins at Shams Tabrizi mausoleum in Khoy

TEHRAN – The installation of the dome at the mausoleum of Shams Tabrizi in Khoy, a major architectural project in northwestern Iran, has begun, according to the director general of West Azarbaijan’s Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Department.

Morteza Safari said on Monday that the project’s distinctive engineering and architectural features would make the dome a prominent urban landmark in Khoy.

The dome will have a total height of 15.5 meters, placing it among the tallest domes built in northwestern Iran, Safari said.

He added that the first phase of the project, involving construction of the concrete structure, had been completed, while work was continuing on a 9.5-meter-high steel framework.

The dome has been designed as a double-shell structure. Its exterior will feature traditional brickwork, while the interior will be decorated with plasterwork and karbandi, a traditional Iranian architectural technique involving geometric ornamental vaulting.

According to Safari, the brickwork has been inspired by historical periods and incorporates innovative, project-specific techniques intended to distinguish the structure from similar architectural projects.

The dome is expected to serve not only as an important cultural and memorial structure but also as an example of contemporary architectural and engineering achievement in northwestern Iran, he said.

Shams Tabrizi (1185–1248) was a 13th-century Persian mystic whose teachings profoundly influenced Jalal al-Din Rumi. He is the namesake of Rumi’s Divan-e Shams-e Tabrizi and is traditionally associated with Rumi’s spiritual transformation. Khoy, in West Azarbaijan province, has historically served as a crossroads of culture and commerce.
